All states require special education teachers to be licensed. Requirements vary by state. Many states use the same licensing requirements as for regular teachers. However, a few states have additional requirements.
Some states provide alternative and emergency licenses to qualified teachers. Requirements for these licenses are often less stringent. In some programs, individuals can begin teaching immediately with a provisional license. They continue to take courses and work under supervision. After a few years they can qualify for full licenses.
In Illinois, speech and language impaired requires a master's degree.
