In a typical work setting, rehabilitation counselors:

Interpersonal Relationships

• Have a very high level of social interaction. They interact with patients throughout the day.
• Communicate with others in person, over the telephone, and using e-mail. They also write letters and memos, but less frequently.
• Occasionally are placed in conflict situations in which patients may be unpleasant or angry.
• Are responsible for the health and safety of their patients.

Physical Work Conditions

• Almost always work indoors. Outdoor activities are sometimes used to help patients relearn skills or to retrain their muscles.
• Work near others, usually within a few feet or in a shared office space.

Work Performance

• Must be exact and accurate when performing their work.
• Make decisions on a daily basis that strongly impact patients. They make some decisions without talking to a supervisor, but often seek input from others.
• Usually set their tasks and goals for the day with input from a supervisor.
• Must meet strict deadlines on a weekly basis.

• Usually work full time.
