In Illinois, a person who provides rehabilitation counseling must be licensed by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation.
Licensing requires an applicant to:
- graduate from an approved bachelor's degree program in human services and verification of 5 years of satisfactory supervised experience, subsequent to the degree; or,
- graduate from an approved master's degree program in counseling, rehabilitation counseling or clinical psychology; and
- pass the National Counselor Examination (NCE) given by: Continental Testing Service, Inc.; Certified Rehabilitation Counselor Examination of the Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification (CRCC); or National Clinical Mental Health Counselor Examination (NCMHCE); and
- pay a fee.
Licensure must be renewed every two years and requires 30 hours of continuing education.
