Naturopathic Physicians - Working Conditions

In a typical work setting, naturopathic physicians:

Interpersonal Relationships

  • Have a high level of social interaction. They consult with patients throughout the day.
  • Communicate daily by telephone, e-mail, and in person. They also write letters and memos, but less often.
  • Are somewhat responsible for the work done by other staff.
  • Have a high level of responsibility for the health and safety of patients.

  • Occasionally deal with conflict situations where patients may be discourteous or angry.
  • May work as part of a medical team.

Physical Work Conditions

  • Almost always work indoors.
  • Work close to patients. They must come into physical contact to properly examine patients and administer treatments.
  • Are regularly exposed to diseases and infections from patients.
  • Occasionally wear gloves or masks.

Work Performance

  • Must be exact and accurate when treating patients. Errors can impact a patient's health.
  • Repeat some of the same physical and mental tasks throughout the day.
  • Make decisions on a daily basis that substantially impact patients and their families.
  • Rarely consult a supervisor when making decisions or setting their tasks and goals for the day.

  • Work in a moderately competitive atmosphere where they must meet daily deadlines.

Hours/Travel

  • May work 40 hours a week or more. Most work 40 hours a week.
  • Usually work a set schedule. May work evenings or weekends to better serve patients.
