In Illinois, nurse midwives are licensed by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation. Requirements for licensure include:

• a current license to practice as a registered nurse in Illinois;
• a graduate degree appropriate for national certification in a clinical advanced practice nursing specialty;
• current national certification as a nurse midwife from the American College of Nurse Midwives (ACNM) or the American Midwifery Certification Board, and;
• payment of the required fees.
