Art Therapists - Working Conditions

In a typical work setting, art therapists:

Interpersonal Relationships

  • Have a high level of social interaction. They communicate with others by telephone, e-mail, and in person daily.
  • Often deal with conflict situations in which others may be rude or angry.
  • Are somewhat responsible for the health and safety of patients.
  • Often work as part of a team.

Physical Work Conditions

  • Almost always work indoors.
  • Work physically near patients, usually within a few feet.

Work Performance

  • Must be exact and accurate when helping patients.
  • Make decisions daily that impact others, usually without consulting a supervisor first.
  • Work in a moderately competitive atmosphere where weekly deadlines must be met.

Hours/Travel

  • Usually work full-time, about 40 hours a week.
  • Often work a set schedule. May work evenings to accommodate client schedules.
