In a typical work setting, art therapists:
Interpersonal Relationships
- Have a high level of social interaction. They communicate with others by telephone, e-mail, and in person daily.
- Often deal with conflict situations in which others may be rude or angry.
- Are somewhat responsible for the health and safety of patients.
- Often work as part of a team.
Physical Work Conditions
- Almost always work indoors.
- Work physically near patients, usually within a few feet.
Work Performance
- Must be exact and accurate when helping patients.
- Make decisions daily that impact others, usually without consulting a supervisor first.
- Work in a moderately competitive atmosphere where weekly deadlines must be met.
Hours/Travel
- Usually work full-time, about 40 hours a week.
- Often work a set schedule. May work evenings to accommodate client schedules.
