Art Therapists

Overview

Art therapists plan and carry out treatments and activities with patients. They use art to help patients improve their physical, mental, and emotional health.

Art therapy is used to treat many conditions, including:

  • Anxiety and depression
  • Mental illness
  • Substance abuse and other addictions
  • Family and relationship issues
  • Social/emotional difficulties related to a disability or illness
  • Cognitive and neurological issues

Art therapists encourage their patients to describe how they feel using art materials such as paint, paper, and clay. They help patients use the creative process to resolve conflicts, reduce stress, and develop skills.

Art therapists usually work as part of a team that includes doctors, nurses, and social workers. Together, they determine patients' therapeutic goals. They develop and implement treatment plans. They keep track of patients' progress. They maintain charts, records, and reports.

Art therapists may also work closely with a patient's family or caretakers to help them understand the patient's problems.

Therapists create a safe environment where their patients experiment with art to express themselves. Therapists choose materials and activities appropriate to their patients' needs. Their goal is to keep their patients physically and mentally healthy.

Art therapists are trained to work with people of all ages. They work with patients one-to-one or in groups. In group work, it is important for patients to use art to communicate with each other as well as with the therapist.

Art therapists work in a variety of settings, including:

  • Hospitals
  • Nursing homes
  • Addiction centers
  • Homeless shelters

Some work independently and maintain private practices. They attend staff meetings and conferences. Some art therapists work as supervisors, administrators, consultants, and expert witnesses.
