Art and Fine Arts, General - Helpful Information

Things to know

Independent art schools tend to focus more intensively on studio work and career preparation. Degree programs at colleges and universities typically provide a broad liberal arts education as well. You should consider which of these types of schooling best fits your needs.

You usually need to buy your own art supplies, including drawing tools, clay, film, and graphic arts software. You may be able to rent or borrow some equipment, such as musical instruments, computers, and cameras.

As an artist, you typically compile a portfolio of your work to promote your skills and talent. You can start developing your portfolio as early as high school. As your skills improve, so does your portfolio because you can be more selective about what work to include.
