Business Management and Administration - Overview

Overview

Business management and administration programs teach people how to work as leaders in the business world. Students learn the basics of business, including accounting, marketing, and human resources. They also learn to plan and direct how a business functions.

To be successful in business, you need to understand the ins and outs of how a business works. You need to understand how goods are purchased and sold. You need to understand how employees contribute to a successful business. You also must understand how goods are promoted through advertising. Business administration and management programs teach you this.

However, what they teach you the most is how to be a good business leader. So while this program may be similar to general business programs, don't be fooled. Business administration and management programs give you a thorough understanding of how to be in control of a business.

Therefore, many of your courses will cover management theory, human resources, and decision-making. You'll also study organizational psychology. This gives you an understanding of how a business operates as a whole.

Your course work will also include standard courses such as micro- and macroeconomics, accounting, and marketing. You also take courses in finance and economics.

Many schools offer both undergraduate and graduate degrees in this field. Typically, you can get a bachelor's degree in this field in four years. Master's of Business Administration programs usually take two years to complete, although some may be completed in as little as a year. Doctorate degrees take three to five years to complete, and usually prepare you to be a professor.
