Webmaster and Web Management - Overview

Overview

Webmaster and web management programs prepare people to manage web servers and websites. They learn to maintain web servers and respond to problems with web sites. They learn about computer systems and networks.

In webmaster and web management programs, you take courses in computer programming languages such as Java and C++. You also take courses about computer networks, database management, and operating systems (think Mac OS X or Windows XP). In addition, you take several web design courses, including computer graphics, color theory, and animation. After all, you need to know how to build a page in order to manage one. You learn about e-commerce, data security, and data transfer. Finally, you also learn about e-mail systems and how to fix hardware issues.

With a degree in web management, you can work for all kinds of organizations, from small businesses to software start-ups to government agencies. After all, nearly every professional organization has a web site. That means people are needed to keep the site and the servers it resides on running smoothly.

Several kinds of schools offer webmaster and web management programs. The most common program is a two-year degree from a community college or technical institute. In addition, several proprietary schools offer programs, including online companies. Several four-year colleges and universities also offer web management programs. Typically these are a concentration as part of studying for a general computer science degree.
