Mental Health Counseling - Helpful Information

Things to know

A few schools offer bachelor's degrees in counseling or human services. However, these programs do not qualify you for private practice or licensure by individual states.

Most mental health counseling programs don't require you to have a specific bachelor's degree to be admitted. However, many encourage you to major in psychology or social work.

Nearly all states require graduates from mental health counseling programs to become certified or licensed to practice. Usually you are required to work for at least two years under the supervision of a certified mental health counselor after you finish your degree. Then, you must pass an exam. Becoming certified shows that you are competent and knowledgeable about your field.
