American Studies - Helpful Information

Things to know

Colleges that do not offer programs in American studies may offer elective courses or certificates as part of a major in interdisciplinary studies or liberal arts. Many programs offer certificates at the graduate level as well.

Very few people who receive a bachelor's degree in American studies ever get a job directly related to the field. Even so, this program provides a solid background for many careers that require a four-year degree. This is also why many programs require you to major in another field in addition to American studies. This makes you much more attractive to potential employers.

A degree in American studies is considered good preparation for graduate study in law, sociology, anthropology, political science, and further study in American studies.

Many American studies programs require you to complete a project about your interests. For example, if you're a photographer, you can put together a set of photographs about famous American politicians.

Many programs offer specializations in African-American and Asian-American studies.
