East Asian Studies - Helpful Information

Things to know

East Asia includes Japan, Korea, China, Tibet, and their related island groups and borderlands.

Colleges that do not offer programs in East Asian studies may offer elective courses or certificates as part of a major in interdisciplinary studies or liberal arts. Many programs offer certificates at the graduate level as well.

Students who major in East Asian studies may be required or encouraged to spend some time living, working, and studying in East Asia. Most programs coordinate semester abroad or work internships. In most cases, you can participate in these after you have completed at least two years of language study.

Some programs only focus on select East Asian countries and languages. In addition, East Asian Studies is often a specialization in many Asian studies programs.

Very few people who receive a bachelor's degree in East Asian studies ever get a job directly related to the field. Even so, this program provides a solid background for many careers that require a four-year degree. This is also why many programs require you to major in another field in addition to East Asian studies. This makes you much more attractive to potential employers.
