The Federal Communications Commission sets standards for radio and television announcers and technicians. Broadcast technicians may also need to be licensed by the state they work in.

An internship is an important way for you get professional references, add depth to your broadcasting or production portfolio, and get experience. In an internship, you may find you are working with people who might hire you when you graduate or who will provide references and professional contacts to you.

Radio and television programs are often part of larger mass communication departments.

Not all broadcasters must have a college degree. Some can learn the trade on the job in supporting roles at radio or television stations. They may get to host news or music shows by having a successful audition. However, most announcers, producers, directors, and managers study journalism and mass communications in college.
