Linguistics - Helpful Information

Things to know

It helps linguists to learn to read and understand many languages. However, you don't need to know a second language to be a linguist. Linguists also are not trained to be interpreters or translators.

Very few people who receive a bachelor's degree in linguistics ever get a job related to the field. Even so, this program provides a solid background for many careers that require a four-year degree. This is because students in linguistics learn skills in critical thinking and writing. These skills are valuable to many types of employers.

In most linguistics programs, students use computer software to analyze languages, sentences, and words.

Most students in linguistics graduate programs teach undergraduate ESL - English as a Second Language - courses.

A bachelor's degree in linguistics is a good starting point for further study in law, business, social sciences, English, and additional study within the field.
