Native American Language and Literature - Helpful Information

Things to know

You may want to explore the existence of Native American tribes in your region. Such tribes may offer programs for the general public.

Many schools offer Native American language and literature courses as part of their Native American studies programs. Programs may also be offered through linguistics departments.

Colleges that do not have complete programs in Native American language and literature may offer elective courses as part of a major in interdisciplinary studies or liberal arts. Often, Native American language and literature is offered as a minor or area of concentration.

Some programs only focus on select Native American tribes and their languages. Often these programs are located in an area in which a specific tribe is located.

Very few people who receive a bachelor's degree in Native American language and literature ever get a job directly related to the field. Even so, this program provides a solid background for many careers that require a four-year degree. This is because students in Italian language and literature learn skills in critical thinking and writing. These skills are valuable to many types of employers. Often, people go on to become teachers, program managers, or social services workers.
