Wood Science and Paper Technology - Helpful Information

Things to know

Most tree farms and forests are in Minnesota, the Pacific Northwest, New England, Northern California, Georgia, and Alabama. Those states have more programs in wood science and paper technology.

Internships are available with companies that make paper products. They may make paper from either wood pulp or paper pulp.

Paper products include cardboard, paperboard, pressboard, solid fiber boxes and containers, packaging paper, coated and laminated paper, napkins, towels, sanitary paper, envelopes, writing paper, building paper, and filter paper.

Most paper that is not recycled comes from tree farms. Large timber companies grow their own trees or buy wood from the public forests or small privately owned woodlots. Some large timber and paper companies grow trees for 20 years before cutting them.
