Many schools offer or require a summer field camp. This is a good opportunity to get hands-on experience in mapping, sampling, and field geology. Some schools also require an independent research project.
Computer skills are essential. You can expect to do a lot of data analysis.
You will also need strong oral and written communication skills. You often need to write technical reports and give presentations in many positions. Take a course in public speaking, if available.
Knowledge of a second language can be helpful, as many jobs require foreign travel.
Some geoscientists spend a large part of their time conducting field research in remote locations. Others work mainly in labs or offices.
