International Relations - Helpful Information

Things to know

Participating in a Model United Nations conference is good preparation for international relations studies. It's also good experience for future careers in the international arena.

International relations programs are sometimes called "international relations and affairs" or "international affairs."

Studying abroad is almost always an option in international relations programs, and sometimes even required. You can study in another country for a term or a full year.

Very few people who receive a bachelor's degree in international relations ever get a job directly related to the field. Even so, this program provides a solid background for many careers that require a four-year degree. This is because students learn skills in research, critical thinking, languages, and writing. Students also have a general knowledge of economics, business, and other cultures. These skills are valuable to many types of employers.

While not always required, many international relations programs encourage you to take statistics courses. A background in statistical research is very attractive to potential employers.

Many schools have internship or employment programs set up with international organizations and government agencies. Internships are encouraged but usually not required.

A degree in international relations is considered a good starting point for further study in law, business, political science, journalism, public policy, and economics.
