Overhead Electrical Line Worker-Advanced Certificate

Dawson Technical Institute (DTI), a satellite center of Kennedy-King College located at 3901 S. State Street in Chicago, Illinois, is dedicated to providing students with intensive and comprehensive industry-validated training in the construction and utility industries. DTI is committed to preparing students to compete in these industries by offering experiential and kinesthetic learning environments that lead to unionized apprenticeships and other relevant trade and utility worker opportunities. In partnership with Commonwealth Edison (ComEd), an Exelon Company, DTI designed an Overhead Electrical Line Worker (OELW) program to benefit students looking to meet the current need for overhead electricians/electrical line workers in the electrical power industry. The Advanced Certificate in OELW prepares students for an entry-level apprentice position with a utility contractor. The program provides instruction in tool safety and usage, construction materials, work site safety, blueprint reading, basic electrical systems, electrical connectors, powerline equipment, overhead distribution line design, anchoring techniques, aerial climbing, and mathematical concepts. Theory and practical hands-on application are emphasized throughout the program. Course content also includes an introduction to the construction trades and AED/CPR certification. Students will receive the OSHA Construction Safety and Health 10-hour Certification and Scaffold Certification upon completing the program.
