Certification is optional for EKG technicians. It is rarely required for employment or advancement. However, certification indicates an EKG technician has strong skills. The basic certificate is the Certified Cardiographic Technician (CCT). To obtain a CCT, applicants must:
- be at least 18 years old;
- have a high school diploma or equivalent;
- pass a written exam; and
- meet ONE of the following four criteria:
- 1) be currently enrolled as a student OR be a graduate of a cardiovascular training program, or
- 2) be currently employed OR have previously been employed in the cardiovascular technology field, or
- 3) have completed an undergraduate or graduate degree in a field related to science or physical health, or
- 4) have volunteered in the field of cardiovascular technology for at least two years.
Certification as a Registered Cardiovascular Technician (RCVT) is available for more advanced applicants. For information on certification of EKG technicians, contact:
