In Illinois, a person must meet the following requirements to become a licensed structural engineer:
- be a graduate of an approved engineering curriculum of at least four years and have at least four years of structural engineering experience; or
- be a graduate of an approved related science curriculum and have at least eight years of structural engineering experience; and
- pass an examination.
Licensure must be renewed every two years and requires 30 hours of continuing education.
Structural engineer intern certification is available from the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation for those who:
- are graduates of an approved structural engineering curriculum of at least four years; or
- have completed a related science curriculum of at least four years and have eight years or more of structural engineering experience after receiving a baccalaureate degree; and,
- pass an examination.
