In Illinois, dental hygienists must be licensed by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation. Licensing requirements include:
- completion of high school or its equivalent;
- completion of an accredited two-year dental hygiene program;
- passage of both written and clinical exams;
- current cardiopulmonary resuscitation certification (CPR); and,
- payment of a fee.
Licensing must be renewed every three years and requires 36 hours of continuing professional education.
