In Illinois, engineers who advertise their services as professional engineers must be registered with the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation. Applicants for an engineer's license must:
- have at least a bachelor's degree from an approved engineering program;
- have at least four years of engineering work experience; and
- pass an exam; or
- have a bachelor's degree from a non-approved engineering program or related science;
- have an additional eight years or more of satisfactory engineering experience; and,
- pass an exam.
Licensure must be renewed every two years and requires 30 hours of continuing education.
Engineer intern certification is also available from the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation for those who:
- have at least a bachelor's degree from an approved engineering program; or
- have a bachelor's degree from a non-approved engineering program or related science;
- have four years or more of progressive engineering experience; and,
- pass an exam.
