Radiographers - Working Conditions

In a typical work setting, radiologic technologists and technicians:

Interpersonal Relationships

  • Have a high level of social interaction. Communicate with others in by phone, e-mail, and in person every day.
  • Are greatly responsible for patients' health and safety.
  • Sometimes deal with conflict situations and patients who are rude or unpleasant.
  • Are responsible for the results of coworkers.

  • Write letters and memos on a weekly basis.

Physical Work Conditions

  • Always work indoors.
  • Work very near patients and doctors, often within inches of other people.
  • Are often exposed to radiation while taking x-rays.
  • Usually wear special protective clothing when taking x-rays.

  • Are exposed to contaminants and diseases from patients almost every day.
  • Often wear protective attire, such as gloves, and special protective gear during x-rays.

Work Performance

  • Must be very exact and thorough in their work.
  • Repeat the same physical activities most days, such as positioning patients before the procedure.
  • Make decisions on a daily basis that strongly impact patients without consulting a supervisor first.
  • Usually set their tasks for they day without consulting with a supervisor.

Hours/Travel

  • Work a set schedule each week.
  • Usually work 40 hours a week.
