In Illinois, the Surgical Technologist Title Protection Act provides surgical technologists the option to register with the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation as a Registered Surgical Technologist.  Voluntary registration requirements include:

• Completion of a surgical technology program approved by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP), Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES), or United States Military Program that emphasizes surgical technology;
• Submission of certification from the National Board for Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting; and
• Payment of a fee

Registration must be renewed every two years.
