Anthropologists and Archeologists - Preparation

To work as an anthropologist or archeologist, you typically need to:

  • have a high school diploma or equivalent;
  • have a bachelor's degree; and
  • have a master's degree.

Education after high school

With a bachelor's degree in anthropology or archeology you can work as a research assistant. In general, you need at least a master's degree to conduct research. This is the most common degree in this field, although in the future, a doctorate may become more desired. A doctoral degree (PhD) is required to lead research projects or teach at a college or university.

In anthropology and archeology, you study the history, customs, and living habits of civilizations. You also learn to work at anthropological and archeological sites.

Work experience

After completing a doctoral degree, some anthropologists and archeologists work as postdoctoral fellows (postdocs). These university positions last for several years. Postdocs get extensive field experience that can lead to a research or teaching job at a university.
