In Illinois, dentists must be licensed by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation before practicing. Licensing requirements include:
- being at least 21 years old;
- graduation from an approved dental college or school;
- passage of written and clinical exams; and
- payment of a fee.
Licensure must be renewed every three years and requires 32 hours of continuing professional education.
