Agriculture Workers - Working Conditions

In a typical work setting, farm and ranch workers:

Interpersonal Relationships

  • Communicate with others in person every day. Occasionally talk over the phone.
  • Work as part of a team.
  • Are responsible for the health, safety, and work done by others.

Physical Work Conditions

  • Mostly work outdoors, may work indoors only when working with farm animals.
  • Are often exposed to contaminants such as pesticides.
  • Work in close proximity to others, usually within a few feet.
  • Are often exposed to very hot or very cold temperatures while working outside.

  • Sometimes wear protective attire, such as gloves and work boots.
  • Are occasionally exposed to hazardous equipment that may result in minor injuries.

Work Performance

  • Must be exact in their work and be sure all details are done correctly.
  • Must allow the work pace to be set by the speed of the equipment.
  • Repeat the same physical and mental activities.
  • Usually make decisions and set daily tasks and goals with some input from supervisors.

  • Work in a moderately competitive environment and meet weekly deadlines.

Hours/Travel

  • May work part time or full time.
  • Usually work more than 40 hours a week.
  • May work a set schedule or one that changes based on the seasons and production demands.
