In a typical work setting, firefighters:
Interpersonal Relationships
- Communicate with others by phone, e-mail, and in person every day. Occasionally write letters and memos.
- Occasionally speak in front of large groups.
- Usually work as part of a team and are responsible for the work done by others.
- Are very responsible for the health and safety of others.

Physical Work Conditions
- Work both outdoors and indoors.
- Work in an enclosed vehicle, such as a fire truck, on a daily basis.
- Are often exposed to contaminants.
- Work in close proximity to others, usually within a few feet.

- Are regularly exposed to diseases, hazardous equipment, and dangerous conditions that may result in minor injuries.
- Often work in cramped spaces that require getting into awkward positions.
- Are exposed to sounds and noise levels that are distracting and uncomfortable on a weekly basis.
- Regularly work in extremely bright or inadequate lighting conditions.
- Wear protective gear, including specialized safety equipment, most days.
Work Performance
- Must be very exact in their work. Errors could result in serious or fatal injuries.
- Make decisions that strongly impact others daily. If time permits, they may consult a supervisor.
- Work a very competitive environment and meet weekly and daily deadlines.
- Repeat the same mental and physical activities most days.
Hours/Travel
- Generally work a set schedule each week.
- Forest firefighters may work days, nights, weekends, and holidays and have an irregular schedule.
