Fire Inspectors and Investigators - Overview

Fire inspectors and investigators check buildings for fire hazards and determine how a fire started.

Fire inspectors examine buildings to detect fire hazards. They look for hazardous conditions or violations of fire codes. They also test fire preventation equipment such as fire extinguishers, smoke alarms, and sprinkler systems.

If a violation is found, fire inspectors discuss changes to be made with building representatives. They may perform a follow-up inspection to make sure changes were made.

Fire investigators determine the causes of fires or explosions. They work on cases where a fire may have been caused by arson (an intentional fire) or negligence (neglection of a property). In these cases, they may testify in court or issue arrests. They may work with law enforcement agencies.

Fire investigators take photos of the damage caused and collect evidence. They interview any witnesses and analyze evidence to determine where and how a fire started.
