Librarians - Working Conditions

In a typical work setting, librarians:

Interpersonal Relationships

  • Have a high level of social interaction with library visitors and staff.
  • Communicate with others by phone, e-mail, and in person on a daily basis. They also write letters and memos, but less often.
  • Occasionally speak in front of large groups of people.
  • Are somewhat responsible for the health, safety, and work of others.

  • Regularly work in a group or as part of a team.
  • Occasionally deal with conflict situations and people who may be angry or unpleasant.

Physical Work Conditions

  • Always work indoors.
  • Work near others in a shared work space.
  • Are occasionally exposed to sound and noise levels that are distracting.

Work Performance

  • Must be exact and very accurate in their work.
  • Often make decisions that affect others, sometimes without consulting a supervisor first.
  • Set nearly all of their daily tasks and goals without talking to a superior first.
  • Often repeat the same activities, such as stocking books or answering questions.

  • Work in a somewhat competitive environment and meet monthly deadlines.

Hours/Travel

  • Generally work a set schedule.
  • May work part time or full time.
  • Usually work 40 hours a week.
