Most school librarians hired in Illinois have taken the prescribed hours in library science after having received a bachelor's degree and being certified as elementary or high school teachers. Certification for health sciences librarians is available from the Medical Library Association. Applicants for certification must meet experience and educational requirements.
Most public school librarians must have a teaching certificate. See the elementary school, middle school, or high school teacher occupation description in CIS for more information about teaching certificate requirements.
Some states also require certification for librarians in public libraries. Requirements vary by state.
