Stationary engineers do not need to be licensed by the State of Illinois; however, they may need a license to work in some cities. Applicants usually must:
- be at least 18;
- have experience;
- live in the area for a certain time; and,
- pass an exam.
There are several classes of licenses for stationary engineers. Each class identifies the type and size of equipment the engineer can operate without supervision. Because license requirements vary from state to state and city to city, an engineer who moves may have to pass an exam to get a new license.
