Physicians - Employment & Outlook

The table below provides information about the number of workers in this career in various regions. It also provides information about the expected growth rate and future job openings.

Employment

Major employers:

  • Doctors' offices
  • Hospitals
  • Federal, state, and local government agencies

Outlook

Demand for surgeons is expected to grow slower than average. As the population grows, the number of surgical procedures will increase. In addition, elderly people are more likely than younger people to need surgery. However, the increase in preventative methods such as therapy can reduce the need for surgery. Also, surgical technologists can perform some of the duties that surgeons previously did.

Job openings will result from workers transferring or retiring.
