There are several different types of certification. Certification is governed by the National Court Reporters Association, although several states have their own distinct exams and requirements.
The entry-level designation for court reporters is Registered Professional Reporter (RPR). Other certifications include the Registered Merit Reporter (RMR), the Registered Diplomate Reporter (RDR), and the Certified Realtime Reporter (CRR). Other, more specialized certifications exist for broadcasting and instructing.
Requirements vary by certification type and by state. Most exams require that you meet certain speed and accuracy requirements. You may also be required to take continuing education classes.
In Illinois, court reporters must be licensed by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation. Licensing requirements include:
- completion of high school or its equivalent;
- passage of both written and dictation exams; and,
- payment of a fee.
Licensing must be renewed every two years and requires 10 hours of continuing professional education.
