Most states require veterinary technologists and technicians to be licensed. Requirements vary by state, although most use the Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE). Licensing is usually governed by the State Board of Veterinary Examiners. Depending on the state, you become registered, licensed, or certified.
Veterinary technologists and technicians who want to work in a research lab may pursue certification through the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS). AALAS offers three levels of certification: Animal Laboratory Assistant Technician (ALAT), Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT), and Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG).
In Illinois, veterinary technicians must be licensed by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation. Licensing requirements include:
- completion of a veterinary technology program accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA);
- passage of the Veterinary Technician National Examination; and,
- payment of a fee.
Licenses must be renewed every two years and requires 20 hours of continuing education.
