Music Therapists - Working Conditions

In a typical work setting, music therapists:

Interpersonal Relationships

  • Have a high level of contact with others. They talk with patients and family members throughout the day.
  • Communicate with others by e-mail and in person daily. They also talk on the phone and write letters and memos, but less frequently.
  • Are moderately responsible for the health and safety of their patients.
  • Occasionally deal with conflict situations where patients may be rude or unpleasant.

Physical Work Conditions

  • Always work indoors.
  • Are often exposed to diseases and infections from patients.
  • Sometimes work in noisy environments that may be distracting.
  • Work in close proximity to others, usually within a few feet.

Work Performance

  • Must be accurate when diagnosing and helping patients.
  • Often make decisions that affect their patients, usually without consulting a supervisor.
  • Repeat the same tasks.
  • Must meet weekly deadlines.

Hours/Travel

  • Often work a set schedule. May work evenings to accommodate patient schedules.
  • Usually work 40 hours per week.
