To work with text, sound, video, computer graphics, and animation, your computer needs at least a sound card, modem, digital speaker unit, and CD-ROM. Most schools require that you buy your own computer.

You can begin developing your portfolio in high school with hobby and project work. As your skills develop, your portfolio improves. An internship in multimedia is a great way to meet prospective employers, build some client references, and bring depth to your professional portfolio.

Independent art and design schools often focus more intensively on studio work and career preparation. Colleges and universities require more credits in general course work. Most art programs teach computer techniques in visual arts.

Especially in digital-oriented multimedia and intermedia programs, you often get to study and create in state-of-the-art computer facilities. You'll be able to work on the latest computers and with the latest digital and multimedia software.

Some multimedia programs focus on the combining traditional art forms, such as painting, sculpture, and photography, with new digital techniques. Others focus solely on digital art and design, with a focus on web site and graphic design or digital photography.

Many people pursue their MFA because these programs typically encourage individual, original projects and allow them to work in advanced positions after they finish their degree.
