Osteopathic Medicine - Helpful Information

Things to know

Osteopathic medical school admissions are on a rolling basis. It is best to apply as early as possible.

After graduating from an osteopathic medical school, you typically go on to get additional training for about two years before you start practicing. This training is called an internship or a residency and is a continuation of your clinical clerkship training in medical school. The difference is that the longer period of time in one particular setting gives you more in-depth exposure and experience. It is also paid on-the-job training.

You need to be licensed before you can practice. Licensure is granted on a state-to-state basis, and requirements vary.

For all states, however, you need to successfully complete the Comprehensive Osteopathic Licensure Exam (COMLEX), which is administered by the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners (NBOME). The exam consists of three parts, which are taken during medical school, at the end of medical school, and at the end of your internship.
