Program Description
Northern Illinois University has 37 nationally recognized licensure programs to prepare you for a career in education. NIU's programs are designed to meet the ever-changing needs of our vital service region and the teachers and students we serve. We are deeply committed to preparing teachers for the classrooms of today and tomorrow. To teach in a public school in the state of Illinois an individual must possess an Illinois teaching certificate. NIU offers initial teacher certification entitlement programs which are approved by the Illinois State Board of Education. A candidate for initial licensure must be accepted for admission by the university and meet the criteria relevant to the individual's status as an undergraduate, graduate, transfer or student-at-large. Each department that offers a licensure program establishes its own program admission requirements.

More information about admission to NIU can be found at https://www.niu.edu/admissions/index.shtml . All applicants may be required to submit the following materials:- A formal application for admission.- An official high school transcript indicating class rank and courses completed. Class rank should be indicated as of the end of the sixth, seventh, or eighth semester unless the applicant will be an early graduate.- An official ACT assessment or Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) score report. (Students copies cannot be accepted.)- An official transcript form each college attended. Additionally, the student will have to pass the minimum requirements for teacher certification from the State of Illinois in order to be certified.
Tuition, fees and books for this program are calculated on the maximum cost. Not all students will need to complete 120 hours at NIU, and may have transfer coursework to significantly reduce the time and cost of this degree.
