Program Description

Human Services is a multidisciplinary course of study that encompasses all the schools of behavioral health combined with Sociology, Social Psychology, Political Science, and any other discipline that intersects with human wellness and development. The Human Services Department of Elgin Community College (ECC) provides education in the clinical application of this knowledge by combining the skills of therapy with advocacy toward the improvement of peoples holistic environments. A student of Human Services need not pursue clinical practice. Graduates of ECCs Human Services Program pursue careers in Psychology, Social Work, Substance Use Disorders, Recovery Support, Human Development, Social Justice, Community Health, Recreation, and Education. Graduates of this program work in a variety of agencies address substance abuse issues. These include but are not limited to prevention programs, harm reduction programs, out-patient programs, in-patient programs, recovery programs in correctional settings, medication assisted recovery programs, and recovery homes. Upon completion of the program students may take the Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor Certificate (CADC) exam offered by the Illinois Certification Board. They may also take the NCAC I exam through IADDA: The Association of Addiction Professionals. Also, graduates of this program find their credits accepted at many four-year colleges.
