Overview

Approved By LWIA: 5
Last Re-Certification Date: 6/29/2023
Next Re-Certification Date: 6/28/2024

Program Description

Human services professionals seek to meet the needs of people through valuing the capacity for human growth and change; advocating for social justice; designing interdisciplinary approaches to human needs; and recognizing people's strengths and abilities. Students are exposed to both education and experiential learning methods in assessment, social policy, individual and group treatment, rules and regulations pertaining to the profession, and personal and professional self-awareness. Students come face-to-face with real problems in learning to help mental health clients in everyday living by pursuing this study option. Classroom training is enhanced by clinical experiences at facilities such as the Elgin Mental Health Center, Ecker Center, and the Elgin Rehabilitation Center. While basic courses in psychology and sociology provide the foundation for work in group processes, additional study and firsthand training allows students to explore intervention techniques, socialization, re-motivation, and behavior problems. The human services generalist program is accredited by the Council for Standards in Human Services Education (CSHSE).
