Program Description

The Physical Therapist Assistant Program is a 68 credit AAS degree that provides students with the necessary skills and education to sit for the National Physical Therapist Examination (NPTE) for PTAs. Students are required to complete 5 prerequisite classes before starting the program. The PTA program is a limited enrollment program, only accepting a total of 24 students annually based on detailed objective scoring rubric that examines the students' grades in prerequisite coursework as well as their score on the National League of Nursing (NLN) examination. Completion of the program takes 5 semesters/2 years. The program begins each year in the Fall and ends the following December. Students attend classes full-time averaging about 20 hours of instruction per week when not in clinical. The program consists of 27 general education credits, 28 didactic/technical credits, and 13 clinical credits. Three clinical experiences are required where students complete clinical hours at outside clinical sites. The first clinical experience is a 4-week clinical that students attend 40 hours per week. The second clinical is a part-time clinical where students attend clinical 3 days per week for 8 hours per day for 8 weeks. The final terminal clinical is full time (40 hours per week) for 8 weeks. Upon graduation of the physical therapist assistant program at Harper College, students are eligible to take the NPTE licensure exam to become a licensed physical therapist assistant.

3WIOA and TAA students need to contact the Harper College Workforce Coordinator at (847) 925-6782 or WIOA@harpercollege.edu. A separate book voucher is required for Follett Bookstore #1341 on campus. Books can be ship if requested for a small fee. Each semester, all Cook County WIOA sending agency case managers must supply the Harper College Workforce Coordinator with a Semester Training Schedule Approval Form that lists the courses the client will be taking that semester, and this must match the client's Harper Educational Plan.4The maximum tuition and fees amount approved for this voucher is $8,000.
