Program Description

This concentrated 36 credit-hour certificate program is designed for the individual who is interested in becoming a medical assistant in a physician's office or other outpatient health care setting. The curriculum provides training in a variety of administrative and clinical tasks to facilitate the work of the physician. Administrative duties include patient communication, computer skills and record keeping. Clinical duties include assisting with examinations, treatments, diagnostic testing, patient education, and preparation and administration of medications.A minimum keyboarding speed of 30 words per minute is recommended to enter the program. 40 words per minute is expected in order to progress through externship. The program may be taken part-time and many courses are available on an evening schedule. An orientation and planning session is recommended by the coordinator. Application Procedure

3WIOA and TAA students need to contact the Harper College Workforce Coordinator at (847) 925-6782 or WIOA@harpercollege.edu. A separate book voucher is required for Follett Bookstore #1341 on campus. Books can be ship if requested for a small fee. Each semester, all Cook County WIOA sending agency case managers must supply the Harper College Workforce Coordinator with a Semester Training Schedule Approval Form that lists the courses the client will be taking that semester, and this must match the client's Harper Educational Plan.4 The maximum tuition and fees amount approved for this occupation is $8,000.
