Program Description

The Child Development: Early Childhood Education Advanced Certificate program at City Colleges of Chicago is designed for students who wish to build on foundational knowledge in child development and gain the specialized skills needed to work effectively with young children in a variety of educational and care settings. This certificate emphasizes both theory and practice, preparing students to support the cognitive, social, emotional, and physical growth of children from birth through age eight. Coursework focuses on child development principles, curriculum planning, guidance strategies, health and safety, and inclusive practices that reflect cultural and developmental diversity. The program prepares students for positions such as teacher assistants, child care providers, or early learning aides in preschools, child care centers, and other community-based programs, while also serving as a stepping stone toward the Associate in Applied Science degree in Child Development. By completing the advanced certificate, students strengthen their qualifications for employment in early childhood education and position themselves for further study and career advancement
