Computer Science, Associate in Science
Overview
Approved By LWIA: 7
Last Re-Certification Date: 12/17/2025
Program Description
The Computer Science, Associate in Science (AS) degree at City Colleges of Chicago provides students with
a strong foundation in computer programming, mathematics, and problem-solving skills to prepare them for
transfer into a bachelors degree program in computer science or related fields. The curriculum emphasizes
core courses in programming languages, algorithms, data structures, computer systems, and calculus, along
with general education requirements in English, natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities. Together,
these courses give students both the technical background and critical thinking abilities needed for advanced
study. Designed under the Illinois Articulation Initiative (IAI), the program ensures that credits transfer
smoothly to four-year institutions. While the degree is primarily intended for transfer, it also equips students
with fundamental computing skills that are valuable for entry-level positions in technology support,
programming, or data-related roles. Ultimately, the program provides a flexible pathway for students interested
in careers in areas such as software development, systems analysis, data science, and information
technology, while building the academic base required for success in upper-division coursework
