Program Description

The Software Development, Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degree at City Colleges of Chicago is designed to prepare students for careers in programming, application development, and systems support. The program provides students with a strong foundation in computer science principles, software engineering practices, and the use of multiple programming languages to design, implement, test, and maintain software applications. Coursework emphasizes problem-solving, algorithm design, object-oriented programming, database management, and web development, while also introducing students to emerging technologies and industry-standard tools. Students gain hands-on experience through lab-based instruction and project work that mirrors real-world development environments. In addition to technical skills, the program also develops critical thinking, teamwork, and communication abilities that are essential in the technology workforce. Graduates of the program are prepared for entry-level positions such as software developer, computer programmer, application support specialist, or web developer, and may also pursue industry-recognized certifications to enhance their employment opportunities. The AAS degree can serve as a terminal credential for immediate employment or as a stepping stone for students who plan to continue their studies toward a bachelors degree in computer science, information technology, or a related field
