Program Description
The Patient Care Technician program curriculum will provide didactic, laboratory, and clinical skills relevant to the need in health care. Typically, it would take two semesters to complete and represents 18 credit hours of course work. Patient Care Technician is a stackable certification program that allows the student to become certified in Nursing Assistant, Electrocardiography (EKG), Phlebotomy, and ultimately after completion of all courses a Patient Care Technician. All certification competencies are completed through National Healthcareer Association and can be completed on-site at the Joliet Junior College Testing Center.
As a Patient Care Technician students will play a critical role in patient care, no matter what type of facility they work in. PCTs work hand-in-hand with doctors and nurses in hospitals, doctor's offices, and long-term care (LTC) facilities, providing standard and advanced clinical duties. PCTs must recognize the individual needs of their patients, and work with other healthcare professionals to create personalized care plans to treat them. This includes caring for and preventing disease and injury, restoring optimal wellness through rehabilitation, educating patients and families, and more.
