Program Description

The Child Development: Early Childhood Education Basic Certificate program at City Colleges of Chicago is designed to provide students with an introduction to the principles and practices of early childhood education. This short-term credential equips students with foundational knowledge in child development, health and safety, and effective strategies for working with young children in group settings. The program prepares students for entry-level positions in child care centers, nursery schools, and early learning programs, where they may work as assistant teachers, child care aides, or classroom support staff under the supervision of more experienced educators. Emphasis is placed on understanding the stages of physical, cognitive, social, and emotional development in children from birth through age eight, as well as fostering inclusive, nurturing, and developmentally appropriate learning environments. The Basic Certificate also serves as the first step in a stackable credential pathway, enabling students to continue on to the Advanced Certificate or the Associate in Applied Science in Child Development: Early Childhood Education for expanded career opportunities and advancement
